FIRST PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH - OUR MISSION

"Love God and Love Our Neighbors"

Jesus is speaking to a teacher of the Law and responding to the teacher's question: "Which commandment is the most important of all?"

Jesus replies,

"You must love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul,

and with all your mind and all your strength.

The second most important commandment is this:

You must love your neighbor as yourself.  There is no other commandment more important than these two."

-- Mark 12:28-31 [from The Good News for Modern Man Bible]

FIRST PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH - VISION STATEMENT

Our vision was developed by prayer and study by the members of First Presbyterian Church of Waynesville.

We believe it describes how God would have us live our mission to love God and love our neighbors.

The seeds of our vision may well have been planted a century and half ago by that circuit rider  who first arrived in Waynesville.  And now – as the future stretches out before us – our charge as the congregation of  First Presbyterian Church is to  remember  God’s faithfulness in the past and to trust  God’s faithfulness for the future.

We envision....welcoming all persons whom the Spirit sends our way, that they too might find “home”  in this diverse community of faith – the old and the young, the poor and the rich, the seekers and the believers – a place to love God and love our neighbors.

We envision....gathering for worship of the One, True God, knowing how much we need to keep God first in our lives. In worship we find forgiveness,  hear the Good News proclaimed, know the comfort of prayer and the joy of song, empowered to love God and love our neighbors.

We envision....serving by sharing our hands, hearts and resources so that Christ is known throughout Haywood County and beyond – that lives are redeemed and restored and needs are met. Working together as the body of Christ, we answer the call of Jesus to go and serve, to love God and love our neighbors.

We envision....growing spiritually as we discover what it means to be a desciple of Christ, discovering a deeper love and devotion for our Lord through faithful prayer,  studying Scripture, participation in learning groups, and personal spiritual disciplines.  Spiritual learning equips us to love God and love our neighbors.

We envision....caring for one another with the eyes of Jesus.  Through God’s grace we will learn to love each person in a deeper and broader way, remembering we are brothers and sisters in Christ with a common calling to love God and love our neighbors.

As our church is built on the firm foundation of Jesus Christ and by the power of the Holy Spirit -- working through the circuit rider and all those who came before us -- we pray God's vision will be our vision.
